Grads prepare for spring convocation at SFU

More than 2,800 Simon Fraser University students are preparing to celebrate the completion of their degrees during convocation ceremonies on June 2, 3 and 4. All ceremonies will be webcast; click here for access.webserver.lidc.sfu.ca/broadcast/convocation/

Two ceremonies will be held on campus each day, beginning at 9:45 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Graduands, led by the SFU pipe band, will participate in colourful processions leading them past the AQ reflecting pond and down the steps into Convocation Mall.

Seven honorary degrees will be conferred during the ceremonies on the following individuals:

Wednesday a.m.: Janine Fuller, manager of Little Sister’s Book and Art Emporium;

Wednesday p.m.: Daryl Duke, an Emmy-award winning film director and producer;

Thursday a.m.: Madame Justice Lynn Smith, UBC’s first female dean of law;

Thursday p.m.: Nancy Greene Raine, Olympic gold medal skier, and 2010 Olympic games spokesperson;

Friday a.m.: Don Rix, a philanthropist and co-owner of MDS Metro, and
Stephen Lewis, former Canadian ambassador to the United Nations ;

Friday p.m.: Marco Marra, director of the Genome Sciences Centre, B.C. Cancer Agency.

The conferring of degrees takes place immediately following the student procession and welcome from SFU Chancellor Milton Wong and President Michael Stevenson. Honorary degree recipients will deliver a convocation address. Student speakers will also participate at each of the six ceremonies.
