The Vancouver Foundation has donated $100,000 toward funding SFU’s fledgling Dialogue Institute and the new Undergraduate Semester in Dialogue program. Both initiatives are connected to the Morris J. Wosk Centre for Dialogue and are intended to achieve university objectives through the centre.

"The Vancouver Foundation’s funding is a very significant donation towards initiating the Undergraduate Semester," says its creator, SFU biology professor Mark Winston, who was recently named a fellow of the centre. "It’s support is deeply appreciated."

The Undergraduate Semester in Dialogue will commence in September 2002. It will use dialogue-based learning to train SFU’s brightest undergraduate students to become dedicated and proficient future leaders. "Ultimately," says Winston, "the program will help to build the university community and lead to the interesting and novel interdisciplinary research opportunities that come through diverse dialogue."

He says it could become a signature program for the university.

The Dialogue Institute is a new research initiative dedicated to understanding and promoting effective dialogue - one of the most elusive goals in human communication.
