Simon Fraser University has a new director of public affairs and media relations. Don MacLachlan, formerly director of public relations for Fraser Health, joined SFU on June 1.

MacLachlan, a former managing editor at The Province newspaper (1988-92) spent more than three decades working in daily media in Vancouver. After six years with The Canadian Press, he joined The Province in 1970 and worked as reporter, assignment editor, editorial writer, city editor, and deputy managing editor.

After his term as managing editor, he became employee relations manager for Pacific Press (1992), and then director of communications for Pacific Press Ltd., now Pacific Newspaper Group Inc. (1994).

MacLachlan was the founding editor and manager of The Vancouver Sun and The Province websites (vancouversun.com and theprovince.com). In 1999 he took on the added role of director of communications for Hollinger Digital Inc. in Vancouver (now CanWest Interactive Inc.)

More recently, MacLachlan served as associate director of communication for the 2003-2005 Citizens' Assembly on Electoral Reform, headed by former SFU President Jack Blaney.

"We are delighted to have someone with Don's extraordinary breadth and depth of experience head up our public affairs team," says Warren Gill, vice-president, university relations. "He will help us find new ways of informing the public of the exciting ideas being generated at SFU."
