Simon Fraser University’s Surrey campus is offering summer camps that combine computers with art and design for children in July and August, including Girl Power camps that encourage girls to learn about technology and an Art and Animation Camp for Aboriginal Students.
"These camps teach things like how to create films, animations or computer games, digital photography and sound effects," says summer camp coordinator, Andrew Drinkwater. "There will be guest speakers sharing their experiences from industries such as music, television, and art and technology."
The Art and Animation Camp for Aboriginal Students, for ages 10 and up, teaches participants how to use artwork, video, music and multimedia and animation tools to build a website, computer game or multimedia project. Team projects will be showcased on the Surrey school district aboriginal education website.
The Girl Power camps are for girls in grades six through eight. Students learn how to create their own films, animations or computer games using scripts, storylines, digital cameras, video cameras, and computers to edit sound effects and music. Drinkwater says all the camps also have an outdoor activity component to them which includes lacrosse, wall climbing, swimming, archery, fencing and/or soccer.
One summer program between July 7 and 21 will appeal to high-achieving grade 11 and 12 students. "The SFU Surrey high school integration program (SHIP) is an eleven-day intensive learning experience," says lecturer and program coordinator, Chris Moore. "SHIP projects have been designed to meet the Surrey high school graduation portfolio requirements. Participants will leave the program with concrete artifacts which may be applied to this evaluation process."
Other camps at SFU Surrey are: Mini University for ages nine to 14; Electron Camp for grades four and five and Ion Camp for grades six and seven
