Simon Fraser University will celebrate the opening of its new Surrey campus on Sept. 8 and 9.

SFU president Michael Stevenson, B.C. premier Gordon Campbell, and Surrey mayor Dianne Watts will take part in the official opening ceremony on the mezzanine level of the new campus on Friday, Sept. 8 at 10 a.m.  Later, architect Bing Thom will give a public lecture, to be followed by tours of the dramatic Central City building, located at 102 Ave. and King George Highway in north Surrey.

On Saturday, activities include self-guided and student-conducted tours of the 21,500-square-metre campus, an academic program and research showcase, and entertainment.

“We’re inviting our neighbours in Surrey, the Fraser Valley and beyond to join us,” says Stevenson. "SFU has a proud legacy of deep engagement with the communities it serves, and we welcome the community as a true partner in the development of our new campus in Surrey."

The campus is already earning high praise. According to the Surrey Now newspaper: "The scale is grand, the views of the cityscape and Mount Baker are stunning, the classroom and corridor colours are spiffy for a campus - try fuchsia and magenta - and sleek, futuristic glass and gleaming surfaces are everywhere.”

SFU Surrey, which has been operating out of nearby temporary facilities since it opened in 2002, is the first research university campus south of the Fraser River, offering degree and non-credit courses in arts and social sciences, interactive arts and technology, education, business administration, computer science and more. It also offers adult education and community programs, and arts and cultural events.

With approximately 1,500 students enrolled this fall, SFU Surrey expects to accommodate more than 5,500 students by 2015. For more information about the SFU Surrey Grand Opening celebrations: www.surrey.sfu.ca/opening
