Simon Fraser University Surrey attracts record student numbers

Simon Fraser University Surrey students and staff are preparing to welcome a record number of new students at the campus’s Orientation next week.
Though 200 first-year students were projected for the Fall semester at SFU’s Surrey campus, there may be as many as 250 new students, according to K.C. Bell, Acting Director of Student and Registrar Services.
"We have 197 students registered, 31 students who have been admitted but haven’t yet registered, several second-degree students and fourteen students who have transferred into these programs from others within SFU" Bell said.
"Given the uncertainty surrounding these programs after the announcement that TechBC would close, we were very concerned about our ability to retain TechBC’s students and to meet our admissions targets. The fact that we have exceeded our recruitment and retention goals speaks strongly to the attractiveness of these innovative programs and to the dedication of staff and faculty at both institutions during the transition period. The degree of cooperation between the two universities in the effort to serve the best interests of the students and to preserve the programs was extraordinary."
Joining the new students when classes start on September 3 will be 282 returning second, third and fourth year students and 53 graduate students. They will be studying towards Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD degrees in Information Technology and Interactive Arts.
SFU Surrey faculty and staff have been busy over the summer preparing the new campus for the students. The campus is located in the space formerly occupied by the Technical University of British Columbia in the Central City shopping mall. To prepare for the increased number of students (enrollment is projected to rise to 600 next year and 800 in the following year), new classrooms have been built, computer labs equipped and signage put up all in a matter of weeks.
Meanwhile, third-year student Kevin Shong and his Orientation team have been preparing to welcome the new students and show them the ropes at a very non-traditional campus.
"We’re not a typical university campus," said Shong. "At SFU Surrey we press the limits of innovation and learning. This is a big adjustment for a student right out of high school. My job is to make it a little bit easier for them."
Simon Fraser University Surrey’s official opening takes place on Monday, Sept. 9, with an Open House from 4 to 5:30 p.m. For more information visit http://www.surrey.sfu.ca
