The emphasis is on “new” at Simon Fraser University's Surrey campus this fall: new classrooms, new programs, new students, new faculty, new offices and new labs.

“It would be easier to tell you what hasn't changed,” says Jane Fee, special advisor to the dean and coordinator of the first-year TechOne program at the campus.

In total, 1,000 undergraduate and graduate students are expected at the Surrey campus, an increase of about 200 students. To accommodate them, office space used by faculty and staff was converted into classrooms over the summer. Faculty and staff in turn moved into offices and labs in SFU's new campus in Surrey's Central City complex. In the fall of 2005, all classes will move to the new, architecturally acclaimed campus.

The SFU Surrey campus has been home to the school of interactive arts and technology since 2002. Campus director Joanne Curry says several new programs will join the school at SFU Surrey this fall, including the faculty of education's professional development program, undergraduate programs in computing science and business administration, and a range of continuing studies opportunities including a CMA fast track program and courses offered by the writing and publishing program.

“I am looking forward to welcoming new and returning students and new faculty and staff members,” says Curry. “I believe these changes will make the campus an even more vibrant community.”
