September 4, 2002
Simon Fraser University Surrey (SFU) is opening its doors on September 9, 2002. Lieutenant-Governor Iona Campagnolo will officially open the new campus at a special ceremony that will be hosted by SFU President Michael Stevenson. Also attending will be Minister of Advanced Education Shirley Bond and Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum, among others. Following the ceremony, there will be a public Open House from 4 to 5:30 p.m.

Simon Fraser University Surrey students will already have been in classes for a week when the opening ceremony takes place. More than 230 new first-year students start classes on September 3, joining 282 returning upper-year students and 53 graduate students. They are studying towards undergraduate and graduate degrees in Information Technology and Interactive Arts.

Simon Fraser University Surrey is located in the Central City shopping mall in the space formerly occupied by the Technical University of British Columbia (TechBC). Earlier this year, the provincial government gave responsibility for TechBC’s students, facilities and assets to SFU, which has committed to continuing the former TechBC programs in interactive arts and information technology for the next few years while a long-term planning committee studies the future of the satellite campus.

Stevenson says the grand opening will show off the facility and will also demonstrate to the local community that SFU is committed to a long-term Fraser Valley presence. Besides the undergraduate and graduate programs, SFU plans to offer continuing studies courses and other community outreach initiatives through the new campus.

The City of Surrey has proclaimed the week of September 9 to 14 as "Simon Fraser University Week", to acknowledge the new relationship with SFU.

Simon Fraser University Surrey is SFU’s third campus. The other campuses are located on Burnaby Mountain and at Harbour Centre in downtown Vancouver. Stevenson notes that with the opening of the SkyTrain Millennium Line, all three campuses will be conveniently accessible by rapid transit.
