September 12, 2002
As new students settle in for their studies this fall at Simon Fraser University more than 1,200 others are preparing to move on. They’ll be part of the university’s fall convocation ceremonies on Thursday, Oct. 3 (9:45 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.) and Friday, Oct. 4 (9:45 a.m.).
On Thursday morning, faculty of arts students will be honored. Thursday afternoon will recognize students in the faculties of education and science as well as those who have earned bachelor of general studies degrees. Friday morning’s event will celebrate the achievements of students in applied sciences and business. On Friday at 2:30 p.m., another 600 students eligible to receive certificates and diplomas (in all fields except education) will be recognized. At 5 p.m. a similar ceremony will focus on those receiving diplomas in education.
Five honorary degrees will be conferred on the following individuals:
Thursday morning: Vancouver Board of Trade chair Carole Taylor;
Thursday afternoon: Dr. Victor Ling, vice-president of research at the BC Cancer Agency, and co-director of the Genome Sequence Centre; and Princeton University President Shirley Tilghman, a founding member of the National Advisory Council of the Human Genome project;
Friday morning: Tong Kooi Ong, one of SFU’s most accomplished alumni in the fields of finance, banking and real estate development; and Angus Reid, the former chairman and CEO of Vancouver-based Ipsos-Reid Inc., now president of Angus Reid Strategies.
The honorary degrees will be conferred following the graduand procession into Convocation Mall, and opening remarks by Chancellor Milton Wong and President Michael Stevenson. Each honorary degree recipient will give an address.
