September 12, 2002
Construction is now underway on the first neighbourhood at UniverCity – the community at Simon Fraser University. To be known as UniverCity Highlands, this neighbourhood will include low and mid-rise apartments and townhouses, along with a colourful village centre offering shops, offices, and other services. Community amenities will include an elementary school, childcare facility, neighbourhood park, and an extensive system of pedestrian and bicycle paths. Approximately 1800 homes will be built over the next 7 to 10 years.
Planning for the new community has been underway for many years. To commemorate the start of construction, a ground breaking ceremony is planned for Wednesday September 18 at 11 a.m. at the site of the future ‘Town and Gown’ Square, immediately across from the transit loop at the east end of the campus. President Michael Stevenson of Simon Fraser University will be joined by representatives of various levels of government and the SFU Community Trust at the ceremony.
Also in attendance will be representatives of five well known lower mainland development companies who have been selected to participate in the first phase of the community development. They include Polygon Homes Limited, Millennium Development Corporation, Intergulf Development Corporation, and Trilogy Properties Corporation in association with Grosvenor Capital Corporation. Together, they are proposing to build approximately 475 condominium apartments and 80 rental apartments, along with new retail and office space. Construction of the housing and commercial facilities is expected to get underway in Spring 2003, with the first residents moving in by Summer 2004.
UniverCity is being planned as a more environmentally responsible community, with an emphasis on walking, cycling and public transit. Consequently, participants and attendees at the groundbreaking ceremony are being encouraged to take the new, convenient Millennium line skytrain and shuttle bus to the university, rather than come by car.
With its spectacular mountaintop setting, next to a major university, and surrounded by a 567 hectare conservation park, UniverCity – the community at Simon Fraser University is destined to become one of Canada’s finest places to live, work and learn.
