Successful Surrey businessman Rob Bakshi, the former chairman, president and CEO of Silent Witness Inc., is the new entrepreneur-in-residence at SFU Surrey. The position is believed to be a first for a B.C. university.

In 1986 Bakshi co-founded Silent Witness, a leading designer and manufacturer of video monitoring technology. Listed on the Nasdaq and Toronto Stock Exchanges, the company grew to become an industry leader in the video security sector, earning more than $57 million in annual revenues.

Bakshi sold the company in 2003 to Honeywell International and now heads a real estate company that is developing properties in Calgary. He also provides consulting services in the area of business development.

As entrepreneur-in-residence, Bakshi will be on campus one day a week, advising faculty, students and staff about the commercial viability of research projects. He'll also be a valuable mentor to students in the applied sciences faculty and to those pursuing the entrepreneurship major in the business administration program.

Bakshi graduated from SFU in 1985 with a bachelor of business administration degree and was honoured in 2002 with an SFU Outstanding Alumni award for professional achievement.
