Films created by Simon Fraser University filmmakers are not only making a strong showing at this year’s Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF), but are also strong contenders for festival awards. Keith Behrman’s poignant portrait of love and loss, Flower and Garnet, will kick off the Canadian Images series of the 21st annual VIFF. The 1993 SFU film graduate’s feature-length fiction is also one of five contenders for a $5,000 Telefilm Canada Award for Best Emerging Western Canadian Feature Film Director.

A Vampire’s Guide to Sweden, a short film created by 1996 SFU film grad Bart Simpson is one of 12 works up for a $4,000 Telefilm Canada Award for Best Emerging Western Canadian Director of a Short or Mid-length film. Simpson’s film, also in the Canadian Images program, is about a vengeful vampire girlfriend who forces her cheating vampire boyfriend to live in 24 hours of sunlight.

Other SFU grads with films rounding out the 104 film Canadian Images program are Oliver Hockenhull, Bojan Bodruzic, Ann Marie Fleming and Joel Taylor.

Two SFU undergrads (Jason Asbel and Brian Warsing) and grad Toni-Lynn Fredrick also have term projects screening at the film festival, which runs September 26 to October 11. See http://www.viff.org or call 604-646-4770 for more information.
