Convocation honors arts, science and sports greats

A pair of internationally-known filmmakers and a football great are among five individuals who will be honored during SFU's fall convocation ceremonies on Thursday, Oct. 5 and Friday, Oct. 6.
Honorary degrees will be conferred on Oscar-winning director Costa-Gavras, documentary filmmaker Allan King, physicist and TRIUMF laboratory director Allan Astbury, Bard On The Beach artistic director Christopher Gaze and B.C. Lion star - and former SFU Clansman - Lui Passaglia.
They'll join more than 2,600 students who make up the fall graduating class.
Convocation ceremonies will be held at 9:45 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on each day. The ceremonies will recognize the following graduands:
Oct. 5 a.m., faculty of arts and social sciences (with the exception of bachelor of general studies degrees). Honorary doctor of fine arts degrees will be conferred on Costa-Gavras and Allan King;
Oct. 5 p.m., faculties of applied sciences and science. An honorary doctor of science will be conferred on Alan Astbury;
Oct. 6 a.m.: faculties of business administration as well as bachelor of general studies, arts and social sciences. An honorary doctor of fine arts will be conferred on Christopher Gaze;
Oct. 6 p.m.: faculty of education. Diplomas and certificates from all faculties will also be awarded. An honorary doctor of laws will be conferred on Lui Passaglia.
