SFU fall convocation set for Oct 3 and 4

More than 1,200 students will be part of the university’s fall convocation ceremonies on Thursday, Oct. 3, 9:45 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., and Friday, Oct. 4, 9:45 a.m.

On Thursday morning, faculty of arts students will be honoured. Thursday afternoon will recognize students in the faculties of education and science as well as those who have earned bachelor of general studies degrees.

Friday morning’s event will celebrate the achievements of students in applied sciences and business. On Friday afternoon at 2:30 p.m., another 600 students eligible to receive certificates and diplomas (in all fields except education) will be recognized. At 5 p.m. a similar ceremony will focus on those receiving diplomas in education

Five honorary degrees will be conferred.

On Thursday: Vancouver Board of Trade chair Carole Taylor (morning ceremony); Dr. Victor Ling, vice-president of research at the B.C. Cancer Agency, and co-director of the Genome Sequence Centre; and Princeton University President Shirley Tilghman, a founding member of the National Advisory Council of the Human Genome project, both (afternoon ceremony).

On Friday morning: SFU alumnus , banker and real estate developer Tong Kooi Ong; and Angus Reid, the former chairman and CEO of Vancouver-based Ipsos-Reid Inc., now president of Angus Reid Strategies. Each will deliver convocation addresses.
