A four-member student team from B.C. came in first in Canada at the annual American Mathematics Competition (AMC). The Grade 12 students attend David Thompson senior secondary. Their scores ranged from 127.5 (Joe Hung) to 143.0 (Tony Li) out of 150 on the oldest international mathematics competition for secondary students. Hung, who is just 13-years old, was among the top one percent scoring students in the world.

Other B.C. top scorers were Jeff Zhao, a grade 10 student from Eric Humber senior secondary, who scored 140.5 in the AMC 12 competition. It was the second highest score in B.C. In the AMC grade 10 exam there were three B.C. students, Wooram Lee from Hansworth senior secondary, Karen Zhou and Zixiang Zhou from David Thompson senior secondary, with the top score in B.C. - 138.

Cary Chien, a teacher who coaches David Thompson Senior Secondary's AMC entrants, has been helping his school produce B.C.'s top scorers for 15 years. Chien has received the prestigious Edith May Sliffe Award for distinguished high school mathematics teaching three times.

More than 250,000 students internationally took the exam this year. SFU honoured AMC winners at the New Scholars reception Oct. 8 at the Diamond University Centre on campus. SFU mathematics and statistics senior lecturer Tasoula Berggren has been administering the exam in B.C. for the last four years.
