Scotiabank announced today a $250,000 donation to Simon Fraser University for the creation of an endowment fund. Income earned on the fund will finance two levels of scholarships for eligible students in the Global Asset and Wealth Management Master of Business Administration (GAWM MBA) program at SFU.

During its first five years of the development, the fund will finance one $5,000 scholarship per calendar year; the scholarship's value will increase to more than $10,000 in subsequent years. A portion of the endowment fund's annual earned income will be reinvested in the fund to protect its value over time.

Full-time students demonstrating academic excellence in SFU's GAWM MBA program will be eligible for the scholarship. Candidates with two years of professional employment experience in the financial services industry will have an edge. In creating the Scotiabank GAWM MBA scholarship in business administration, Scotiabank aims to attract and help financially support promising students in the GAWM MBA program.

“Scotiabank has a strong commitment to education, and is proud to support Canadians in pursuing their academic goals and obtaining a first-class education through institutions like Simon Fraser University,” said Bev Voice, Senior Vice-President, B.C. and Yukon Region, Scotiabank. “This is an important partnership for us because we believe in funding programs that add value -- that are aimed at fulfilling real needs, developing real skills and delivering real benefits to students.”

Recipients will receive their awards over three consecutive semesters of study. They will meet a Scotiabank representative and have their names inscribed on a plaque displayed in the Scotiabank Student Investment Advisory room in the Segal Graduate School of Business.

The academic director of the GAWM program will nominate candidates for the scholarship; nominations must be in to SFU's dean of graduate studies by May 30 and/or September 30. The dean will confirm scholarship recipients after consultation with the GAWM program director.
