A $270,000 infusion from the Canada Foundation for Innovation's New Opportunities Fund will help fuel the ground-breaking research of two SFU scientists.

Computing science professor Richard Vaughan received $120,000 to fund a project that will reduce the cost and increase the effectiveness of scientific data-gathering in the field. The Research Laboratory for Scientific Data Acqusition Transportation and Storage (SDATS) aims to develop automated data gathering and retrieval systems for natural and health sciences researchers working in remote, hazardous or challenging environments.

Chemistry professor Charles Walsby's research team aims to decipher the role of metals in biological and inorganic catalysts; his work will ultimately aid in the design of new treatments for diabetes. Walsby received $150,000 to purchase an electron nuclear double resonance spectrometer to advance his program.

The CFI, an independent, federally created research-funding body, awards New Opportunities Funds to newly recruited, full-time faculty pursuing leading edge research that benefits Canadians.
