Leadership award honours couple's lifelong community commitment

Simon Fraser University will honour George and Jane Hungerford's tireless commitment to community causes and advocacy with a 2004 Distinguished Community Leadership award. The award will be presented Thursday, Nov. 18 at the Waterfront Hotel in Vancouver at a dinner starting at 6:45 p.m.
"The Hungerfords' passion and dedication to a wide variety of causes is extraordinary, and their contributions are a testament to their generosity and leadership,” says SFU president Michael Stevenson. “SFU is proud to bestow this honour upon them."
The couple's lifelong involvement in community service has been more than participatory and philanthropic. Both have helped to guide community organizations and projects during periods of change, growth and development. Their dedication has been felt in community causes from health care and social services, to education and the environment, as well as athletics.
They have made major contributions to the fight against cancer. Jane has been chair of the B.C. Cancer Foundation and a board member of the B.C. Cancer Agency, while George has been chair of the major gifts committee, helping to raise more than $120 million to construct the new B.C. Cancer Research Centre and create the Michael Smith Genome Sciences Centre.
The pair was also involved in the establishment of Science World -- Jane serving on the initial board and George co-chairing the capital campaign.
George, a partner in the law firm Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP, serves as chair of the Greater Vancouver Salvation Army advisory board. Jane is a past volunteer with the annual Red Shield fundraising appeal. She is currently chair of the UBC Alumni Association and has served as a member of the board of governors at Crofton House School as well as director of the school's foundation and alumnae association.
The two are currently working with UBC, St. George's School and the city of Richmond to establish a world-class rowing facility. George, an Olympic champion rower, is the founding director of the Olympic Club of Canada, a current electoral member of the Canadian Olympic Committee and director of the successful 2010 Olympic Bid Corporation.
The community leaders were recipients of the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal. Jane has received the Volunteer Vancouver leadership award and a Junior League of Vancouver award. George was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1984 and appointed Queen's Counsel in 1991.
