Simon Fraser University and the City of Burnaby have strengthened their research partnership with two newly signed memoranda of understanding (MoU). The agreements provide for further cooperation on research projects and teaching opportunities involving municipal issues, Burnaby Mountain Conservation Area (BMCA) and other city-owned parks and spaces. SFU President Michael Stevenson and outgoing Burnaby Mayor Doug Drummond signed the understandings in a ceremony at Burnaby City Hall on Wednesday, November 27, 2002.
Under the MoU, city administrators will be in a better position to consult with SFU researchers when assessing the social, economic and physical impact of proposed municipal developments. SFU researchers will be able to use Burnaby’s municipal government as a living laboratory to study the impact of municipal decisions on a city. "The opportunity to enter research partnerships with Burnaby and to study municipal government will provide significant learning and experiential opportunities," says Stevenson.
A Working Group on Research and Teaching in Burnaby Parks and Open Spaces will be established to review and approve collaborative research involving the BMCA and other Burnaby parks. The MoU also will enable projects, such as an outdoor training and research laboratory for the advancement of urban ecology, public education and interpretive programs. A staff representative from the city’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services department and a SFU faculty member, appointed by the vice-president research, will chair the Working Group.
In honour of Drummond’s accomplishments as mayor of Burnaby and his work in fostering relations with the university, SFU has also created an endowment fund to support of a new research fellowship in his name. The Doug Drummond Research Fellowship will be awarded annually to a SFU graduate student pursuing research on a subject related to the city of Burnaby. The value of the fellowship will be based on a portion of the endowment’s earned income. Donations to the fund can be made by contacting SFU’s advancement office.
