British Columbia’s Electronic Library Network (ELN) is moving from the Open Learning Agency (OLA) to Simon Fraser University’s Burnaby campus under a new agreement with the Ministry of Advanced Education (AVED).
ELN, a partnership between AVED and B.C.’s post-secondary libraries, develops, promotes, and maintains licenses for electronic journals, indices and e-books. It also coordinates the interlibrary loans traffic for B.C. post-secondary institutions and supports other tools that allow the libraries to meet students’ and researchers’ expanding information needs.
Last spring, AVED issued a request for expressions of interest to transfer ELN from OLA to another public, post-secondary institution in B.C. SFU was chosen based on its demonstrated support from ELN partner libraries and stakeholders, its long history of leadership in this area, and its willingness to work collaboratively within the ELN consortium.
SFU librarian Lynn Copeland says that SFU’s library is renowned for its technological innovations and has collaborated with ELN in the past. "A number of our goals and activities complement those of ELN," says Copeland. "I think it’s a natural fit and we’re committed to continuing to support ELN in providing the services they offer for all of B.C.’s post-secondary institutions."
Anita Cocchia, ELN’s manager, is proud of what the network has accomplished over the past 14 years under OLA but is excited about moving to a new host institution. "My first priority in this transfer is to maintain uninterrupted service levels. I know that under SFU’s care, ELN will not only maintain, we’ll continue to grow."
Simon Fraser University offers bachelor, masters and doctoral degree programs to more than 20,000 full and part-time students each year. In its 39 year history the university and its more than 650 faculty have established a tradition of excellence, innovation and responsiveness. Maclean’s Magazine consistently ranks Simon Fraser University among the top comprehensive institutions in Canada.
The Open Learning Agency is an internationally recognized leader in the delivery of lifelong learning opportunities, the provision of access, the development of instructional materials, and the educational use of technology in the provision of education and training services.
