February 24, 2003
Managing change and innovation is integral to all companies today, whether they are ‘old economy’ or ‘new economy’.
To focus research and teaching attention on these issues, SFU Business and Weyerhaeuser Company Limited have partnered to establish the Weyerhaeuser Professorship in Change Management at Simon Fraser University.
Dr. Tom Lawrence, an outstanding scholar in the field of organizational management, recently joined SFU Business and will hold the professorship. Awarded a 2001 Ascendant Scholar award from the Western Academy of Management, he most recently taught organizational collaboration and change at the University of Victoria.
"Change, and change management, is a topic that is pervasive in all we do as a company, making it a field of study where research and learning can be of significant benefit to us," says Dr. Alan Pelman, vice-president of technology at Weyerhaeuser.
Weyerhaeuser is funding the professorship with a five-year financial commitment.
"We are obviously delighted at the support and leadership Weyerhaeuser has shown in providing this professorship," says Ernie Love, dean of the business school. "One would be hard pressed to find a business not immersed in change these days. It is important for us to infuse in our students a need to not just embrace change but to develop the confidence to champion it and the skills to manage it."
"Funding this professorship is an opportunity for Weyerhaeuser to support the advancement of knowledge in this field," says Pelman, "while benefiting from relationships that will evolve with the university and with the holder of the professorship."
