SFU Business welcomes Gary Brent as the first ‘executive-in-residence’ for the Global Asset and Wealth Management MBA program.
Brent has more than 25 years’ experience serving the financial needs of high net worth Canadians and can make a valued contribution to the Global Asset and Wealth Management MBA program, which focuses on both the technical aspects of investing as well as the softer, architectural aspects such as estate planning and client relationships.
Brent recently retired from his position as chairman and chief executive officer of RBC Global Private Banking, a division of the Royal Bank. Prior to that, Brent was president and chief investment officer of CT Investment Management Group, the wealth management division of Canada Trust before it merged with TD Bank in January 2000. He was also one of the founding partners in TAL Private Management Ltd. and acted as vice-chairman and chief executive officer prior to its sale to CIBC in 1994.
"Gary was a key participant in the original design of this program and his formal involvement as executive-in- residence is most welcome," says Peter Klein, academic director of the program. "His breadth of experience in the wealth management industry is a tremendous resource that will greatly enhance the overall educational experience we are able to offer our students.
"I applaud SFU for their commitment and far-sightedness in developing the Global Asset and Wealth Management MBA," says Brent. "It is an area in the academic continuum that is long overdue, focusing on the much needed architectural and structural issues that weave together the disciplines of investments, tax and trust to address the complex, yet inter-twined, affairs of the individual and their family. It is truly an honour to be able to play a role in the evolution and ongoing development of something this important to Canadian families."
