Three new types of honorary degrees announced for 2003

SFU will present seven distinguished individuals with honorary degrees during convocation ceremonies in June and October. This year, the university will grant three new degrees in addition to the traditional honorary doctor of laws, honoris causa: doctor of science, honoris causa; doctor of fine arts, honoris causa; and doctor of letter, honoris causa. Receiving the honors are:
John Alleyne, artistic director of Ballet BC, will receive an honorary doctor of fine arts, for his achievement in, and contributions to, the world of dance.
Lüder Deecke, a neurology professor at the University of Vienna, will receive an honorary doctor of science for his outstanding discoveries in the area of brain research.
John Dixon, president of the BC Civil Liberties Association, will receive an honorary doctor of laws, for his vigorous guardianship of civil liberties in Canada.
Mike Harcourt, former BC premier, will receive an honorary doctor of laws for his accomplishments as a community activist and politician.
Jack Kowarsky, one of BC’s most successful lawyers, will receive an honorary doctor of laws recognizing his community leadership, in particular his development of the national Arthritis Research Centre of Canada.
George Pedersen, former SFU president and founding president of Royal Roads University in Victoria, will receive an honorary doctor of laws for a commitment to community service and educational leadership that spans more than 50 years.
Max Wyman, Vancouver Sun arts and culture commentator and Order of Canada recipient, will receive an honorary doctor of letters for his long service to, and development of, the fine arts in Canada.
