Experienced business professionals now have a new, more flexible option for earning the Certified Management Accountant (CMA) designation.

Simon Fraser University’s Learning Strategies Group (LSG) and the Certified Management Accountants’ Society of BC (CMABC) have partnered to offer the CMA Executive program. The program launches in September 2003.

CMAs are strategic financial management professionals who combine accounting expertise, business acumen and professional management skills to provide leadership, innovation and an integrated perspective to organizational decision-making.

"Delivering the CMABC’s Executive Program is another example of the ever-growing partnership between SFU and CMABC," says Ernie Love, SFU Business Dean. "Launching this program in partnership with SFU Business, a leader in executive education, broadens access to the CMA designation while maintaining CMABC’s traditional excellence and rigorous standards."

The CMA Executive Program is aimed at those who have a minimum of five years mid to senior level practical experience as a financial or strategic management professional. During the program, executives will apply contemporary and emerging strategic business practices in their place of work. "They will learn the theory, but they will also be evaluated on how they apply it in their daily activities at work," explains Colin Bennett, CEO of CMABC.

Given the business and personal demands faced by today’s management professionals, the two year, part-time program incorporates both innovative self-study and face-to-face classroom sessions with peers and professors.

In the program’s first year, students study business foundation courses, including financial accounting, corporate finance, operations management, marketing, human resources, information technology, strategic management, international business and management accounting. In the second year, strategic leadership is the focus. The program uses a case approach to business challenges such as product or service development, market entry and optimal corporate structure.
