June 2, 2003
More than 2,600 Simon Fraser University students are preparing to celebrate the completion of their degrees during convocation ceremonies on June 4, 5, and 6.

Two ceremonies will be held on campus each day, beginning at 9:45 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Graduands, led by the SFU pipe band, will participate in colourful processions leading them past the AQ reflecting pond and down the steps into Convocation Mall.

Five honorary degrees will be conferred during the ceremonies on the following individuals:

Wednesday morning: John Dixon, president of the BC Civil
    Liberties Association
Wednesday afternoon: John Alleyne, artistic director of Ballet BC
Thursday afternoon: Michael Harcourt, former BC premier
Friday morning: Jack Kowarsky, noted lawyer and community leader
Friday afternoon: George Pedersen, former SFU president

The conferring of degrees takes place immediately following the student procession and welcome from SFU Chancellor Milton Wong and President Michael Stevenson. Each honorary degree recipient will deliver a convocation address. Student speakers will also participate at each of the six ceremonies.
