Their skirl is on a roll. SFU’s Robert Malcolm junior pipe band claimed its third first place title during the world championships in Glasgow, Scotland on August 16. Meanwhile the Grade 1 band’s third place finish shows the band remains one of the best in the world.

The junior band competes in world competition every two years and picked up gold medals in 2001 and at its first ever championship in 1999.

The junior band was formed in 1994 in the memory of two band members who were killed in a car accident. The 28 members are staying abroad and will participate in competitions in Northern Ireland Aug. 23-24 and at the Cowal Highland games in Scotland on Aug. 30.

The Grade 1 band has four first place wins under its belt and last year finished second. This year two other European bands moved up in what for the past decade or so has become an exchange of prizes in the top three. House of Edgar-Shotts and Dykehead from Scotland finished first while the Northern Ireland’s Field Marshall Montgomery placed second.

Band manager Rob MacNeill has returned home and can provide more detail of the competitions. Junior band members are expected to return Sept. 1
