September 17, 2003
This weekend, lower mainland residents will have an opportunity to view models and plans for four developments now underway at UniverCity, the community at Slimon Fraser University.
Representatives of the SFU Community Trust, and three participating developers will be on hand at an open house to present their plans for the first housing and mixed use developments within The Highlands Neighbourhood, now under construction. A total of 450 condominium apartments, and 115 rental housing units are being built, along with new shops, offices, and a town square. A neighbourhood park and elementary school are also being planned, along with an extensive bicycle and pedestrian pathway system.
UniverCity is being heralded as one of the most important new sustainable communities in North America. It has been planned for approximately 200 acres of land surrounding the SFU Campus on Burnaby Mountain. When completed, two decades from now, it will be home to up to 10,000 residents.
Some of its unique features include comprehensive green building guidelines which will result in reduced water and energy consumption and improved indoor air quality; legalized secondary suites which will allow a portion of an apartment to be rented to students, resulting in a ‘mortgage helper’ for the owner; an innovative storm water management system based on infiltration, rather than storm sewers; and special arrangements for car and bicycle cooperatives.
The open house will be held on site at the east end of the university. Tents have been set up to house the displays, and two presentation centres will be open for viewing from noon to 5 pm, Saturday Sept 20 and Sunday Sept 21. For more information, visit the UniverCity website at www.UniverCity.ca
