Companies interested in achieving a triple bottom line – one that satisfies profits, people and the planet – need a special type of leader, says Carolyn Egri, an associate professor of management and organization studies with SFU Business.

Egri has done extensive research into leadership and environmental sustainability, discovering that in most cases, successful leaders in this arena have personal values that are ecocentric and open to change. Their personality characteristics tend to include a need for achievement, affiliation, and power while also exhibiting a high degree of emotional maturity and self-confidence.

They are inspirational, notes Egri. They are innovators, facilitators, mentors and brokers and aspire to meet and conquer challenges that may seem insurmountable to others. "We need transformational leaders like these to achieve the goals of sustainable enterprise, too," says Egri.

Senior executives can learn more about leadership for sustainable enterprises at the upcoming Sustainable Enterprise Academy’s Business Leader Seminar in Vancouver October 20-23, 2003, hosted by SFU Business and the Schulich School of Business.

The seminar will provide insights into trends, drivers and opportunities for sustainable business; business models for sustainable and profitable corporations; and changing management techniques for transforming corporate culture toward sustainability.

"Research demonstrates that environmental leaders identify a need, clarify the vision and inspire followers who might support their vision. It is their energy, enthusiasm, dedication and perseverance that enable their organizations to start and thrive. Companies interested in embracing sustainability need leaders like this too."
