SFU’s faculty of education is hosting a symposium called Education with/out Borders. The borders are interdisciplinary rather than physical. Education faculty members, faculty associates, students in the professional development program, graduate students and faculty elsewhere are invited to network and hear presentations about cross-disciplinary educational issues.
The three-day event, October 3-5 at the Sasamat Outdoor Centre, in Belcarra, was so successful last year the education faculty decided to host it again. With more than 100 people already registered, there is now a waiting list for participants. Among speakers and issues presented, SFU education dean Paul Shaker, SFU assistant professors of education Heesoon Bai and Charles Bingham and SFU education grad student Hartley Banack will talk about community in a postmodern world. SFU education professor Lannie Kanevsky and author Daniela Vance will discuss special populations within the classroom. The graduate programs director in SFU’s education faculty Kelleen Toohey and SFU associate professor of education June Beynon will discuss pedagogical models for equity and inclusion in diverse school communities.
