A critical look at health care changes in BC…SFU’s Institute for Health Research and Education (IHRE) and Gerontology Research Centre are hosting the first public discussion of the BC government’s changes to its delivery of healthcare since they were announced in April 2002.
Provincial Health Minister Colin Hansen and Intermediate and Long Term Healthcare Minister Katherine Whittred will be guest speakers at the free forum. It takes place Tuesday, February 4, 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m., Fletcher Challenge Theatre, Harbour Centre. "The changes announced last April by the BC government are wide ranging and fundamental. And yet there has been no real discussion of these changes and what they mean," says Tom Koch.
The bioethicist and adjunct professor at SFU’s Gerontology Research Centre will speak at the upcoming seminar, which he helped organize. Koch will present research that suggests the government’s changes "are not a restructuring but a fundamental contraction of services, at least 10 percent in some health districts."
Other speakers at the half-day event include Gloria Gutman, professor and director at the Gerontology Research Centre and Michael Hayes, IHRE associate director. Nancy Olewiler, a SFU economics professor, will chair the discussion, which is open to members of the SFU community and, on a space available basis, the media and the public. Speakers will be available for media interviews during a session break at 2 p.m. Call the Gerontology Research Centre at 604.291.5062. RSVP to book a seat at the seminar. Media should call 604.291.5151to book an interview.
