Democracy at what price in Iraq?…As Iraqis prepare to go to the polls on Sunday in their first democratic election, the country is looking more like a war zone rather than the birthplace of fledgling freedom. The death toll continues to climb as a result of suicide bombings in the name of preventing a free vote that could solidify a government opposed by insurgents. Curfews, Iraqi police and National Guard troops are in place to protect voters and guard polling stations. There are several experts in political science at SFU, especially related to terrorism, the Middle East, Iraq's fate, American foreign policies and world stability who can analyse events leading up to Sunday's election and its results.
Alex Moens, political science, international security and military issues, American politics, 604-291-4361, 604-858-0917
Douglas Ross, political science, Iraqi election, American 'exit
strategy' in Iraq and the risks of premature withdrawal from the region and beyond. 604-291-4782/5183, 604-737-8049

    - Michael Fellman, history, U.S. politics/history, until January 31, 250/629-2218; afterwards, 604-261-8243.
Andre Gerolymatos, history, transAtlantic conflicts; military strategy, security issues in Iraq and region, impact on western alliance, future of war, role of Iran, Turkey and Syria, 604-291-5597, 604-420-6704
