Concerns over climate change
Scientists are meeting in Europe this week to report on the latest climate-change research. Several SFU faculty members can share their expertise on the environment as well as climate-change issues, from Mark Jaccard, SFU’s resident energy expert, to Tim Takaro of health sciences, who can look at the health impacts of global warming. A complete list can be found at http://www.sfu.ca/mediapr/news_releases/issues_experts.

Suspect under the spotlight
The Robert Pickton trial is in its second week with a focus on the police interrogation of the suspect. Robert Gordon, director of the School of Criminology, can look at police interrogation procedures and investigation methods. He joins a handful of other SFU faculty members who have expertise in areas relating to the Pickton case. See http://www.sfu.ca/mediapr/news_releases/issues_experts for a complete list.

Taking aim at the Liberals
Negative political advertising works – but it also can turn off voters, says SFU veteran political scientist Patrick Smith, who can talk about the federal Conservatives’ recent attack ads targeting Liberal leader Stephan Dion. SFU communication professor Catherine Murray says it’s as if Harper is “on constant election readiness.” She says it’s unusual to lead with an attack ad, even in a Canadian federal election, and that the attack may be “too soon.” Business professor Gary Mauser says the ad campaign will help define Dion, known by relatively few voters, before the next election campaign, and help the Tories defuse the environment as a Liberal issue.

Afghanistan’s dilemma
Five years after the U.S-led. invasion of Afghanistan, the country remains in serious crisis, despite a new democratic government and continued foreign military presence. Doug McArthur, professor of public policy at SFU, is working to help build the country’s new democratic parliamentary institutions and processes. \ McArthur will talk about what lies ahead for Afghanistan at a seminar on Thursday, Feb 1, 12 noon – 1:30 p.m. at SFU’s Vancouver campus, Harbour Centre, rm 3000. McArthur can also be available for media interviews..
