Promises from the PM…This week’s throne speech promises everything from tax cuts to commitments to new social policies. It also aims the election spotlight squarely on the Liberals and on the reactions of the opposition parties. Among SFU faculty who can respond to the various issues are: political scientist Patrick Smith, who can look at Prime Minister Paul Martin’s overall direction and its implications for the Liberals and opposition parties, heading for the next election; political scientist Laurent Dobuzinskis, who specializes in Quebec politics and can look at the impact on that province of the government’s plan to spend federal money in some key provincial jurisdictions; political scientist David Laycock, an expert on the Alliance party, who can look at the party’s role in the wake of a growing NDP profile; Warren Gill, an urban geographer who can look at the so-called new deal for cities, highlighted by millions in savings through a GST rebate; and Peter Grimmett, who specializes in education policy.
Israel threatens to pull plug on settlements…Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon says he wants to remove Jewish settlements in Gaza without waiting for a peace deal. The settlements, home to about 7,500 Israelis, have been targets of armed Palestinian groups. His plan prompts threats from allied far-right parties to bring down his government. SFU historian William Cleveland, an expert on the Middle East, says despite the threat, the developing situation in Iran is much more pressing. He is monitoring developments in both regions.
