Parliament returns, Emerson backlash grows
Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s Conservative government laid out its plans for Canada this week with a return of MPs to Parliament. What will those plans mean for taxpayers? SFU political scientist Patrick Smith can look at Harper’s agenda as well as the issue that won’t go away: the growing voter backlash against floor-crossing Vancouver-Kingsway MP David Emerson.

Jailed activist freed
Environmental activist Betty Krawczyk has just served a prison term for trying to protect BC forests by putting herself in the path of logging trucks. She is one of 13 women whose prison stories are detailed in a new book by SFU criminologist Karlene Faith called 13 Women: Parables from Prison. Others include Anne Hansen, of the infamous Squamish Five. Faith has spent 30 years studying prisons, focusing largely on the lives of women in prison. She can talk about how and why women end up behind bars.

Swimming relay style, swimmers broke the women’s and men’s 200 metre records as well as the women’s 800 meter freestyle record. Swim coach Liam Donnelly can talk about why his team is involved in the cause. Event organizer Penny Pedersen, wife of former SFU President George Pedersen, can look at the impact of the disease, which struck two grandchildren and claimed the life of one.
