Reversal of fortune
After bowing out of business to enter politics as a Conservative member of parliament and then crossing the floor to join the now ousted federal Liberal government, Liberal MP Belinda Stronach is back in business. SFU federal politics analyst Patrick Smith can elaborate on his reaction to Stronach’s return to Magna International, an auto parts manufacturing giant. Smith says, “I guess who you back and bite can come back to haunt you.”

Entertaining anarchism
Is art imitating life, with anarchism stealing center stage in the movies, on Broadway and on television? SFU historian Mark Leier, author of Michael Bakunin: The Creative Passion, has some insight. Leier’s book examines the thoughts of Bakunin, a 19th century anarchist, and anarchism in their historical and present-day contexts. Today, Bakunin and anarchism are central characters in the ABC television series Lost and the Broadway production Coast of Utopia. Anarchists also thicken the plot in the new novel Against the Day and in movies such as Monkey Warfare, Children of Men, The Heart of the Earth and the soon to be released The Battle in Seattle.
