Issue: Federal election: sooner or later? ...The federal Liberals' negotiations with the NDP for their support on the budget vote could help to stave off an immediate election, but even if support is secured, will it be enough? Not necessarily, cautions SFU political science professor Patrick Smith. He also says all parties are wary of the wave of resentment to a June vote, viewed as unpopular, and even inconvenient, given the Queen's planned visit to Saskatchewan (Smith notes it would be postponed during an election campaign). Smith can assess the fall-out from the meeting.

Issue: Provincial campaign hits week two…As developments shape the provincial election campaign and catch voter interest, students in Catherine Murray's fourth-year course on politics, propaganda and political communication are scrutinizing every move. “We're watching as it unfolds,” says Murray, a communication professor who can talk about the classroom discussion as well as polls and public opinion trends. Murray is among several SFU faculty members who can look at various aspects of the election campaign. For a complete list contact SFU Media & PR at 604.291.3210 or check www.sfu.ca/mediapr

Idea: Turning off the tube...April 25 to May 1 is TV Turnoff Week, when North Americans are challenged to give up their TV habit cold-turkey. SFU associate communication professor Richard Smith can comment on the event, including the recent introduction of the TV-B-GONE, a key-chain remote control capable of turning off virtually any television with the touch of a button. Education researcher Kym Stewart can talk about a six-week Tune Out campaign at a local school which aims to help students examine the impact of media on their lives.

Idea: Restoring Simon Fraser's grave…The final resting place of SFU's namesake, explorer Simon Fraser, has fallen into sad disrepair, according to a group of historical folk in St. Andrews West, Ontario, where the pioneer is buried. They hope to restore the site, and, together with the local Cornwall township historical society, raise funds for the project. Resident Maureen McAlear says the stone fence erected in 1938 to protect the site has crumbled due to weather and road salt. “I think that Simon Fraser would be amazed that people separated by such great distance could be brought together just because of his name and his deeds,” says McAlear, who can talk about the project.
