Softwood deal, girl violence - Issues, Experts and Ideas

Softwood deal a hard sell with provinces, forest industry
The US and Canadian governments may have reached a tentative agreement to resolve their decades-old softwood lumber dispute, but support for the deal by forestry provinces and industry leaders is far from unanimous. SFU softwood lumber trade expert and economics professor Richard Schwindt can comment on this latest development in the ongoing trade war, particularly BC's position and how it compares with other provinces. Public policy professor Doug McArthur, who helped negotiate a previous softwood deal, can also weigh in and clarify the issues that have perennially divided the two sides. Political scientist Alex Moens can speculate on how the Americans might respond if Canada passes on the arrangement. And Moens, who has written a biography on George W. Bush, can also reflect on how a yea or nay on the pact might affect the budding Bush-Harper relationship.

The recent murder conspiracy charges in Ontario against two Grade 9 girls and triple-murder charge in Alberta against a 12-year-old girl and her 23-year-old boyfriend have sparked concerns over increasing violence by young women. SFU criminology professor Ray Corrado, an expert on youth violence, can comment on the troubling trend.
