Contentious health relations and one-size-fits-all drug policies: Issues and Experts

Eleventh hour deal averts general strike…How healthy are labour relations in BC following an eleventh hour deal between the provincial government and health workers that averted a general strike? SFU labour expert Mark Leier can shed some light on how useful this deal will be in calming the volatile labour relations in BC’s healthcare system. SFU gerontologist Tom Koch can talk about the likelihood the health care system can get on top of the backlog of surgeries as a result of disintegrating relations between health care employers and employees. SFU business administration professor Gary Mauser can tally up the score on who is really winning the political public relations battle in BC’s ongoing healthcare skirmishes. And, John Calvert, an adjunct professor and sessional instructor in political science at SFU, can speak about the kind of national public and labour relations policies that exist to deal with fractious health care issues.
Pot Politics…Is a one-size-fits-all drug policy possible for all nations? Professor Robert MacCoun, of the Goldman School of Public Policy and the Boalt School of Law at the University of California, Berkley will discuss possible futures for the US war on drugs in a lecture at SFU’s Harbour Centre campus on Monday, May 10. MacCoun will examine the increasing diversity of drug policies in Canada, Europe and Australia, the politics of medical marijuana, the sources of US resistance to harm reduction, and the potentially dramatic effects of emerging vaccine-like treatments against cocaine and nicotine addiction.
