Issue: Robbing the poor to make the rich richer…That's what Krishna Pendakur fears is the net result of Lower Mainland housing trends, together with cuts to public services, and tax cuts that favour the rich. The SFU economics professor specializes in public and labour economics. He blames the Lower Mainland's rising number of homeless on the convergence of “increasing inequality in the distribution of real consumption possibilities with a real estate boom and rising rents.” Pendakur says while crime, drug addiction, mental illness, incarceration and other factors matter, “it's the variation in poverty and rents across cities and time that correlate to homelessness.” Pendakur can look at how tourism, the 2010 Olympics and impending election results could further impact soaring homelessness.

Issue: Bullying invades cyberspace…Students at some local schools say that the harassment assessment form they bring home annually for their parents to fill out includes something new: electronic bullying, otherwise known as cyber bullying. This would include harassment by text messaging, websites, email and other forms of virtual communication. Gerald Walton, a SFU research grants facilitator in education, is doing his doctorate on homophobic bullying, and recently attended a national conference in Ottawa on the manifestations of bullying, including electronic. Walton can talk about the conference discussions on this new form of harassment, and offer some thought on the extent to which electronic bullying stems from the underlying causes of all bullying in society.

Idea: Honor for athletics founder…It could be said that SFU's athletics department was built on Lorne Davies' shoulders, and that its stronghold on success came from following early directions he set out. The university's founding athletics director is being recognized on Friday, May 6, at 2 p.m. as the department officially changes the name of the Chancellor's Gym to the Lorne Davies Complex. Davies, a former football player, is also a pioneer in the move to recruit, market and fundraise for sport. Though retired from the job, Davies, now in his 70s, is still a regular on campus, where he oversees the Terry Fox Foundation, created in memory of the young runner Davies knew first as an SFU basketball player.
