Sex, drugs and political wildcards: Issues and Experts

Playing out a political wildcard…Given his reputation for political posturing and drama, former NDP MP Svend Robinson is often dubbed a political wildcard in federal and provincial elections. And that won’t necessarily change just because he’s backed away from federal politics, according to political scientist Patrick Smith. Smith can comment on the possible political impact of an Alberta advocacy group’s efforts to have criminal charges laid against Robinson for his recent self-confessed theft of a valuable ring. Political marketing expert Gary Mauser can also comment on the potential ripple effect of Robinson’s bad press on the NDP campaign.
Reefernomics…Decriminalizing marijuana could translate into a tax high of more than $2 billion according to economist and Fraser Institute fellow Stephen Easton. Easton can expand on his new study, which recommends lifting the prohibition on marijuana so that government coffers, rather than organized crime, can benefit.
Talking sex, gender and health ….A conference at SFU’s Harbour Centre campus, June 10 to 13, is the first international academic event to discuss the correlation between gender, sexuality and health. Sue Wilkinson, the Ruth Wynn Woodward endowed professor of Women’s Studies at SFU, can talk about the conference’s speaker lineup and objectives.
