World Urban Forum targets future sustainability – SFU highlights
Global urban growth and planning are the key issues at this week’s World Urban Forum in Vancouver (June 19 – 23). Members of Simon Fraser University’s Centre for Sustainable Community Development and Urban Studies program are among those who are front and centre, convening sessions, participating in discussions and sharing research and new initiatives, including the CSCD’s new Sustainable Building Centre, which recently opened on Granville Island.
Strengthening local economies
CSCD director Mark Roseland will talk about how to strengthen local economies — his contribution to a forthcoming book, the State of the World, 2007: An Urban Planet — on Wednesday, June 21 from 9:30 a.m. – noon at SFU Vancouver’s Harbour Centre campus. Roseland and other authors will discuss early versions of their chapters. Roseland can also provide comment on discussions during the event related to community economic development and sustainability.

UN delegates tour UniverCity
Delegates from the United Nations World Urban forum will be on Burnaby Mountain to tour the UniverCity development on Thursday, June 22 at 4 p.m. They’ll get a close look at the features that have made UniverCity an award- winning project and an environmentally and community friendly development. The tour will be headed by SFU Community Trust director Michael Geller, who earlier this week hosted 50 senior planners from around the world. Geller can also comment on the latest research coming out on urban planning at the forum, and Vancouver Mayor Sam Sullivan's newly announced EcoDensityVancouver initiative for making urban living affordable.

Report compares local priorities with global goals
The Regional Vancouver Urban Observatory has released a report, Counting on Vancouver, Our View of the Region, which suggests there are “critical gaps in our knowledge” about trends related to the environment, governance, culture, poverty and economic development. “As a city-region rich with human and natural resources and with sustainability aspirations, Vancouver does not yet have good habits of considering its global impacts,” says director Meg Holden, of SFU’s urban studies program, who can talk about the report’s findings.
