NDP race starting to take shape…North Vancouver city councillor Craig Keating is the first and still the only declared candidate in the race to succeed interim provincial NDP leader Joy MacPhail. But that isn’t stopping political pundits from speculating about whom else is interested in taking over the helm. SFU political scientist Patrick Smith, a veteran analyst of many federal and provincial election campaigns, figures the candidates will fall into three camps. "I had thought the serious candidates would come primarily from the old guard with edge," says Smith. "But now I think it’ll more likely be ex or current MPs in one camp, such as Nelson Rees or Jim Fulton; the most recent former cabinet ministers in the last provincial NDP government, such as Mike Farnworth and Graeme Bowbrick could comprise a camp with cabinet experience. The third camp would be made up of a new generation of politicians, many of them from the municipal sector, such as Keating."
