Spotlight on Surrey campus: Women shoppers prefer online ‘warmth’

Middle East conflict rages on
As thousands of Canadians are rescued from Lebanon, tensions in the Middle East continue to rise, with Israel saying it is prepared to fight Hebollah ground forces for several more weeks. SFU historians William Cleveland, an expert on the Middle East and author of A History of the Modern Middle East, and Andre Gerolymatos, who specializes in military strategy, can assess the rising conflict. SFU sociologist Heribert Adam can provide insight into solutions to the conflict. He is author of Peace-making in Divided Societies, The Israeli-South African Analogy.

A Novel Idea
A few novels on your summer reading list? The fifth annual Symposium on the Novel, organized by SFU's summer publishing workshops, brings together novelists, other writers and their readers for a dialogue (this year) about the increasingly international flavour of Canadian novels, on Saturday, July 22 at SFU Vancouver (Harbour Centre), 10 am to 3:30 pm. Do these new novels still reflect Canada? What is the effect of the immigrant experience? Writers Anar Ali, Jim Bartley, Lewis DeSoto, JB MacKinnon and Eden Robinson consider these and other topical questions followed by a panel of critics, journalists and editors. John Burns of the Georgia Straight is quoted as saying this event is like "a day spa for your brain." Media seating at the event is limited. Please call Suzanne Norman, 604.291.5241 to ensure a seat.

Spotlight on SFU Surrey research – our new campus opens Sept. 8

Women shoppers prefer online ‘warmth’
Online shopping that offers a warm and social environment is more appealing to women shoppers than men — and that could have significant implications for web designers, according to a new study on gender differences in e-commerce. Research shows that women are less likely to purchase online than men. A survey of 185 participants who were tested on five experimental web conditions revealed that women were more influenced by the presence of social elements. SFU Surrey business professor Dianne Cyr, who worked on the study, can talk about the findings.
