Let the games begin…The 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens Greece get underway later this week, and several athletes with links to SFU will be among those vying for medals - including Olympic gold medal freestyle wrestler Daniel Igali, who is hoping to repeat his 2000 Olympic games performance in his new 74 kilo weight class. (Igali is nearing completion of his master's degree in criminology). Wrestling coach Dave McKay is also returning and will lead both men's and women's teams (women's wrestling is an event for the first time). Neal Ewers and Carol Huynh, both from SFU, are alternates on their respective teams.
The national softball team is led by SFU coach Mike Renney, and sports five players with ties to SFU: Rachel Schill, a sophomore outfielder, former Clan catcher Erin Cumpstone, shortstop Angela Lichty, former Clan pitcher Auburn Sigurdson, who led the team to a national title last season, and outfielder Sasha Olson.
Middle distance runner Emilie Mondor (a biology student at SFU) is making her first Olympic appearance. Former SFU kinesiology student Jill Savege is competing in the triathlon while former biology student Kamini Jain is once again rowing in the K-4 competition.
Wilf Wedmann, SFU's director of athletics and recreational services, will be available to talk about the athletes' performance as events unfold. For further background on athletes contact Steve Frost at 604.291.4057

Performing against the elements…Besides competition from their peers, athletes aiming for medals in Greece will also have the elements to contend with; high heat and humidity. SFU kinesologist Matthew White is involved with the school of kinesiology's climate chamber, which can host a range of temperatures from minus 25 degrees Celsius to plus 50 degrees, investigating the effects of temperature on the body. An advisor to North Vancouver tri-athlete Carol Montgomery, he can look at what the athletes face and how to best approach such conditions in order to maintain peak performance.

The games return home…The Olympics have returned to the games' birthplace, Greece. SFU's chair of Hellenic studies, Andre Gerolymatos, specializes in Greek politics and culture and can look at the political, cultural and international aspects of the Olympics. The SFU historian also studied the classics before moving on to modern studies.
