It’s not what you expect when you settle into your seat to learn at a public school — to be confronted by a gunman who then proceeds to shoot at you and everyone around you. That is what happened at Dawson College this afternoon in downtown Montreal, where four people were killed and 16 injured. SFU social psychologist Michael Schmitt is available to talk about what leads people with a fatal axe to grind to victimize innocent people in wide-open-to-the-public school settings. He can draw parallels between this incident and a string of similar ones that have occurred at schools worldwide, in recent years. Tim Rahilly at SFU’s office of the registrar can address questions about security. Can a public campus ever be secure enough to prevent this sort of tragedy? Interestingly, Rahilly is a graduate of Dawson College and knows the campus community well.
