Short term gain for long term pain in the forest…B.C.'s lumber industry is increasing its logging levels in the Prince George region in the hopes of stopping the mountain pine beetle in its tracks and reaping some profit. It will be short-term gain though, with long-term pain the likely prospect. The mountain pine beetle is expected to devour 80 percent of B.C.'s mature pine by 2013. SFU biologist and pine beetle expert John Borden has long argued B.C.'s mountain pine beetle infestation is a forestry emergency and requires more than money to resolve. Borden can talk about his view of what lies ahead for BC in dealing with this emergency.

Russia revisits centralized government…In an effort to curb terrorism within Russia's borders, rebellious republics and its flow of fleeing citizens, the country's president is calling for stronger central government. It's an ominous proposition to those who associate centralized government in Russia with the rise of communism. Lenard Cohen, an SFU expert on Balkan politics, can talk about how justified Russian President Vladimir Putin is in wanting to centralize his power for the greater good of the country. Cohen has studied and written extensively about the evolution of political power before and after the fall of the Soviet Union as a communist block.

Hockey takes the spotlight…A huge win for Team Canada against Finland has raised the spirit of fans, but the reality of an anticipated lock-out in the dispute between NHL players and administrators is quelling the elation. SFU lecturer Irwin Shubert studies Canadian hockey and teaches a course called Hockey in Canadian popular culture (spring semester), and can look at the state of hockey in light of its place in the growing spotlight. Meanwhile, SFU marketing analyst Lindsay Meredith can assess the news around the possible sale of the Vancouver Canucks hockey franchise to local interests.
