Just back from a five-month stint in Nigeria, Olympic champion Daniel Igali says his support for Maureen Matheny Academy, which opened in his village of Eniwari in August, will be a life-long commitment — in the short term, that will mean working to fill it with computers and books. He returned home to find $25,000 in donations had accumulated for the school, calling it “a great start” in his bid for supplies. Igali had hoped to get back to his graduate studies (in criminology) at Simon Fraser University this fall but will likely put plans on hold and return to Nigeria in a few weeks to continue setting up the school’s operations. Igali can talk about his experiences over the past months as well as future plans.
