In search of modern Iran

The quest for nuclear energy, extremist comments by the president, a hard-line clerical leadership – what makes Iran what it is? What drives its desires for the future? Abbas Amanat, professor of history and international studies at Yale University, is the person to ask. Author of the forthcoming book, In Search of Modern Iran: Authority, Nationhood and Culture, Dr. Amanat will be at SFU Vancouver (Harbour Centre) on Thursday, Nov. 23, 7 p.m., to give the Mirhady lecture in Iranian studies: Nonconformity and Toleration in the Persianate Cultural Climate.
