For rent: Green suites at Verdant

SFU has the perfect solution for newly recruited continuing full-time faculty, visiting academics and senior administrative staff looking for a convenient and eco-friendly place to rent: The Verdant at UniverCity.

The award-winning, recently completed townhouse strata complex within SFU’s UniverCity community atop Burnaby Mountain features 60 spacious, eco-designed suites, the majority of which are already owned by current faculty and staff.

But SFU owns and rents 20 of the two-bedroom, two-bedroom-plus-den and three-bedroom suites, all with two bathrooms, and about 10 are currently available for new or visiting faculty members and new senior staff at 20-per-cent below market value. “They can rent from a distance, online, and move right in once they arrive. And after six months to two or three years they can move on, either into a resale at Verdant or somewhere else.

"And for those chairs, directors and deans who have people coming on a temporary basis of from three months to a year, Verdant also offers them short-term housing.”

Designed to the Canada Green Building Council’s LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) construction standards, Verdant is a model of sustainable environmental living combined with modern convenience. It won two recent awards from the Urban Development Institute for innovations in affordable housing and sustainable development.

The four-storey complex affords close and convenient access to SFU’s Burnaby campus and is located in a park-like setting near hiking trails, daycare facilities, shopping, banking, restaurants and other amenities.

Energy efficiency includes geothermal heating, laminate flooring, energy-efficient stainless steel appliances, water-efficient chrome fixtures, pendant lighting and much more. The geo-exchange heating will emit 374 fewer tonnes of greenhouse gases per year than a similar building developed to code.

Verdant also has secure underground parking, a video entry-door access system, smoke and heat detectors and power surge protection for electronics and computers.
