Gordon Harris, an award-winning, Vancouver-based urban planner and real estate consultant, is the new head of the SFU Community Trust. His appointment as president and CEO took effect Jan. 1, 2007. Harris takes over from Michael Geller, who served as president for the past seven years. Harris will oversee the continued development of UniverCity, the award-winning community adjacent to the SFU Burnaby campus. To date, more than 1,000 homes have been completed, along with the first phase of the town centre.

Harris is considered one of Canada's leading providers of market-based economic analysis and strategic-planning support to local governments and the private sector. He has been a consultant to a wide range of Canadian and international clients since 1988. His professional planning work in B.C. and Alberta has earned awards from the Canadian Institute of Planners, the Planning Institute of B.C. and the Alberta Association of Planners.

Harris has also served on the advisory board of the Centre for the Study of Commercial Activity and is a member of Smart Growth BC. He has served as chair of the Planning Institute of British Columbia's membership committee and as a member of the Institute's governing council (2003-2006). Geller, who is now heading off on an eight-month world tour of architecture and urban places, has been appointed an adjunct professor in SFU's Centre for Sustainable Community Development.
